Michael Gorton AM has been appointed Chair of the Board of the Alfred Hospital

Michael Gorton AM has been appointed Chair of the Board of the Alfred Hospital effective from 1 July 2017.

The Victorian Government has announced the appointment of nine Victorian Health Service Board Chairs.  Michael Gorton AM, Principal of Russell Kennedy joins a list of leaders in their respective fields with proven experience in improving performance, clinical governance, strategy, finance and service performance to put patient safety first.

The Chairs will oversee and manage major Victorian hospitals to ensure they provide high quality, timely care, and meet performance targets and expectations. The appointments are for three years, and come into effect from 1 July.

The Board includes the following appointees:

  • Mr Brian Cook as Chair of Barwon Health
  • Dr Sherene Devanesen as Chair of the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital
  • Mr Michael Gorton AM as Chair of Alfred Health
  • Ms Diana Heggie as Chair of Peninsula Health
  • Hon Rob Knowles as Chair of the Royal Children’s Hospital
  • Ms Linda McCoy as Chair of Latrobe Regional Hospital
  • Ms Nicola Melville as Chair of Albury-Wodonga Health
  • Ms Bronwyn Pike as Chair of Western Health
  • Ms Rebecca Woolstencroft as Chair of Goulburn Valley Health

Victoria’s health system is leading the way when it comes to increasing the number of women in leadership positions, with these appointments bringing the number of female Chairs in the health sector to 74 per cent.

Michael currently Chairs the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and is a Board Member of Ambulance Victoria, Melbourne Health and Melbourne Primary Care Network among other positions.
