Russell Kennedy Lawyer Angela Liu, and Law Graduates Joanna Petousis & Stephanie McHugh have had an article published in the Australian Health Law Bulletin titled 'Queensland Coroner calls for urgent implementation of a real-time prescription monitoring system — a review of the inquest into the deaths of House, White, Smith and Milne'.
The article analyses the findings of the Coroners Court of Queensland regarding the increasing number of deaths from prescription opioid-related abuse.
Specifically, the findings reviewed four deaths that were due to fatal consequences of prescription opioid abuse and found that instances of inappropriate prescribing practices, doctor-shopping and a neglect of practitioner education were partly responsible. Recommendations made by the Coroner included a national implementation of a real-time prescription monitoring system, further education for opioid prescriptions and collaboration amongst medical bodies.
